Communities In Schools (CIS) Houston
About:
Communities in Schools (CIS) Houston is a non-profit organization that aims to prevent teens from dropping out of school through empowerment and meeting their individual needs. Their mission is to “surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.” Approximately half of students in the Houston area do not graduate high school within four years due to various circumstances, such as mental illness, pregnancy, or unsatisfactory grades. However, students who take advantage of the full extent of CIS services have a 98% stay-in-school rate. CIS collaborates with over 100 schools in the Houston area to provide at-risk students with direct social services and referrals to available community resources. Over 30,000 students are helped by CIS annually.

Mental Health Services:
One of the services that CIS provides is a Mental Health program to improve emotional health, enhance coping skills, and reduce behavioral challenges, therefore improving school performance. Students may be referred to the program from teachers, parents, principles, or CIS staff. Participants work with mental health professionals licensed by CIS who provide support groups, treatment, and referrals. CIS also partners with community organizations, such as Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Greater Houston and Montrose Counseling Center. Services include: a Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) group that meets at Reagan High School during lunch once per week (about 16 students currently attend), family counseling with DePelchin Children’s Center free of charge, and walk-in services.
